A low-slung T similar to this one, but with a GM Atlas motor (and disc brakes)
I feel like the Atlas gets no love. Either an LL8 I6 out of a TrailBlazer or an LLR I5 out of a Colorado modified to run individual throttle bodies. Add some lake pipes with electric cutouts and it’d be perfect.
Yeah, it’d probably end up being more expensive than a SB Chevy/Ford or an LS, but it’s also way more interesting. 250-350 hp and a tremec 6 speed would be hilarious in something only weighing ~2000 lbs.

I wanna see this done

The 5-cylinder would be the best reason to do this, for the oddball factor of it all.

The T kits are dirt cheap, I might get around to it some day.

It’s true the Atlas gets no love, great motors burdened to turd cars

I agree, especially with individual throttle bodies and lake pipes.

They made good power too, even the much maligned I5 (which I love) made 242 hp stock.

Ideas like this are what keep the hobby interesting.
I can’t wait to see Murilees Atlas powered 41 Plymouth run.

I’ve also got access to a more traditional (but rarer) Ford flathead V8 60. It’d be fun, but slow.

Flatheads are cool too though. Anything other than the belly button 350 or 5.0 works. I want to do something involving a Supercharged Ecotec at some point.

Cosworth Vega Ecotec swap. Yeah, I’m getting that way with LS motors too. Brilliant performance, but entirely uninteresting.

I like your idea. You should start building.
Keep in mind that there isn’t any bolt on solution for a manual transmission for an LL8. The crankshaft to flywheel mounting bolt pattern is unique and left the factory with an automatic behind them.
For the LLR the manual can just be taken from the same Colorado that will be donating the engine. The transmission is decent and strong but according to rumors it isn’t suitable for fast shifts and it is very noisy (this probably doesn’t matter much). Using the same bellhousing an R154 from Toyota can also be used. These transmission choices work also with an LL8 but the flywheel still has be custom made.
The original engine management system has an annoying anti-theft system that doesn’t let the engine work without the body computer. Certain enthusiasts can bypass this problem or you can actually purchase a communication set to modify the settings yourself.
There’s one appearance problem with fitting it into a low-slung hot rod. These engines are extreme tall. It’s going to be sitting very high. Here are rough dimensions for an LL8 (these are not made by me).

Love the idea of a Cosworth Vega Ecotec swap.
Did you guys get anything with the C20XE? Cosworth heads on those engines too, but done properly. Would be another great candidate.

Yes! Great idea.
Another oddball option would be a supercharged Pontiac SOHC 6.
I love the idea of making killer I6 pony cars as well.
Atlas Camaro.
Oz Falcon I6 Mustang.
Pontiac SOHC Firebird (bonus points if it's got the transaxle IRS from a Tempest with the suspension updates from the gen 2 Corvair).

I’ve thought about doing something similar with the I5 turbodiesel out of an older Mercedes. I think they were available with a manual (to the best of my knowledge) but those engines sound BEASTLY whenever they’re uncorked.

this would be spectacular to do something dumb with............ the critter is so light that you wouldn’t need any torque, so,............ ROTARY????

This is a good idea, I’ve always wanted to build something similar, but with something like an eco-boost 4, or even an electric drive setup. I love the V8 rods as much as the next guy, but stuffing the same old 350 in the same old T-bucket gets old in a hurry. Flatheads will never get old though.

One of my favorite SEMA builds is this ‘34 with an Ecoboost V6

Atlas powered Firebird, unfortunately I can’t find any more pictures of it. http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/…

Nice! Shall see if I can do some digging on that :)
